Hatchery

The cultivating process starts with conditioning the brood stock. In a space especially designed for this purpose, the mature shellfish are kept at a certain temperature and an optimal diet.

Using a temperature shock, the conditioned shellfish are encouraged to reproduce. The fertilized ova are accommodated in 1000 L tanks with 1 um filtered and UV-disinfected sea water. The fertilized cells develop themselves within 48 hours into larvae.

Larvae are cultivated in special tanks with a continuous fresh sea water flow. This creates the possibility of cultivating the larvae under optimal conditions and a high density (up to 10 milion larvae per tank). The larvae are constantly fed with high quality micro-algae.

After larval stage of approximately two weeks, the larvae are transferred to a ‘down welling system’. This is where transformation takes place from pelagic larvae to settled shellfish spat.
